Spiral into Hell {excerpt}

I remember looking over my shoulder and spotting a blue flashing light tracking us, shimmering in the rain.

It was the highway patrol! And my heart skipped a beat.

Ray as well noticed the blue flashing light and, knowing what it signified, panicked and floored the gas pedal. He was trying to elude the cops as he had a bum license plate on and was way too drunk and high to face an officer and evade charges.

There were no seat belts in the car, and I was being flung from side to side as we took the curves. I couldn't talk or say anything. I felt numb and scared. It was like a bad nightmare, only this was real.

As Ray approached a hairpin curve, he yelled, "Hold on! We're going to crash!"

I was clinging to the mixed drink in my hand and remember putting my knees up to my chest to brace myself for the impact.

The car missed the turn and went down the embankment at 80 miles an hour. We struck a huge tree.

The tree broke and fell directly over the car.
