"Spiral Into Hell" – written by Vicki P. Bowman.

Reviewed by Mario S. Fedele.

"Spiral Into Hell" is a heart wrenching story about addiction and the devastating effects it can have on an individual.

Ms. Bowman holds nothing back as she allows the reader to glimpse her most personal of experiences. She is so totally candid and open about it that we get to witness her trials and tribulations just like we were there with her.

As if her addiction to alcohol did not cause her enough misery and hardship, she also suffered severe spousal abuse. At times, the reader wonders how Ms. Bowman will ever overcome such odds stacked against her.

But, her problems do not end there. Life has more to throw at her as she loses her left leg below the knee, following a nasty car accident.

She sinks to her lowest depths while she struggles with a prosthesis and tries to raise an infant at the same time.

"Spiral Into Hell" is a must read. The story will draw the reader in and will not let go till it's fully told. To be sure, one will not soon forget what is related therein.

This book belongs in every household where drugs of any sort are an issue. It is a true testimony to Ms. Bowman's struggle with addiction and an uplifting tale of how she overcame the sad and miserable plight she found herself in.

If you are looking for an in-your-face look at the effects of alcoholism you must read Vicki P. Bowman’s Spiral into Hell. Vicki P. Bowman has been a drinker from a very early age, from when she immigrates to the United States as a young bride. Once she begins to drink she suffers hangovers the following day but goes right back to the bottle again in the evening. Drowning in booze, pain and bitterness, she moves from one marriage to another, suffering abuse while self medicating with more booze and drugs. She drinks when she is sad, when she is happy, when life is good or bad: the situation doesn’t matter. It becomes a vicious cycle that finally ends when she realizes that she is a slave to the alcohol demon.  She learns from Alcoholics Anonymous and through them she finally gets a handle on the out of control cycle she has been living.

I have the most profound esteem for Ms. Bowman for having the courage to put pen to paper and tell her very heartrending story. If you think the life of an alcoholic is not gritty and ugly and desperate then you have not been directly affected by the disease. Spiral into Hell brings into brilliant Technicolor the abuse and neglect this reader suffers at the hands of an alcoholic husband. This memoir is so emotionally wrought, it caused quite a few breaks to dry my eyes. I hope other addicts and their families learn a very valuable lesson from this book. It took great courage to write such a deeply emotional story and I, for one, heartily applaud Vicki P. Bowman; she is an author I admire in every sense.

AND ANOTHER.....

Vicki Bowman has known since she was a young girl that she would one day drink, thinking she would be happy. She was happy when she drank but would feel awful the next day. Yet the following night, she would be drinking again. What would it take to make her stop and realize that this was not the life for her?
Vicki married, got pregnant and moved to America to be with her husband. But her life changed once she arrived and not for the better. Over the years, she became dependent on alcohol to get her through her everyday life. Although she never let it take her so far down she did not look after her children. She struggled with her alcoholism over many years and three marriages. When she lost her leg in a car crash, she still returned to the bottle as she felt it was her only friend. As she saw her oldest son struggling with drink and drugs, she finally realized she needed to take back control of her life.
I have the deepest and utmost respect for Ms. Bowman. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen my family members go through what she did, yet they keep going back for more. Her story is very touching, deeply moving and well worth taking the time to read. I applaud Ms. Bowman for sharing her story with others and hopefully her story will touch the lives of many others. If you know someone going through not just this addiction, but any addiction, I urge you to read her story and take comfort that any addiction can be overcome with a lot of help.
